Can I install a GFCI outlet myself safely and correctly?

Installing a GFCI outlet should be done by a licensed professional because GFCI outlet wiring is different and must be installed correctly to work. The most common issues after DIY installs come from miswired line/load connections that prevent the device from providing protection where water is present. GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter; it monitors current and cuts power if electricity starts going where it shouldn’t. These devices are required or recommended in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, crawl spaces, and unfinished basements. Our licensed team handles code checks and inspections and regularly retrofits older homes to current safety standards across the Atlanta area, including Brookhaven.

Call a pro promptly if you notice any of the following during or after an outlet project:

  • Frequent GFCI trips after a proper reset
  • Warm or visibly sparking outlets or switches
  • Buzzing from the device or box
  • Odors that resemble burnt plastic

Turn off the breaker and avoid DIY on live circuits until a licensed electrician verifies correct GFCI wiring.
